He who lives with untruth lives in spiritual slavery. But the day has passed for superficial patriotism. Rationalizations and the incessant search for scapegoats are the psychological cataracts that blind us to our sins. In international conflicts, the truth is hard to come by because most nations are deceived about themselves. The time has come for America to hear the truth about this tragic war. I preach to you today on the war in Vietnam because my conscience leaves me with no other choice. Now, let me make it clear in the beginning, that I see this war as an unjust, evil, and futile war. I'm using as a subject from which to preach, "Why I Am Opposed to the War in Vietnam." The intentional destruction of agriculture and nature, which robbed hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese of their livelihoods, would become the origin of a new term: Ecocide – The destruction or extinction of an ecosystem. The sermon which I am preaching this morning in a sense is not the usual kind of sermon, but it is a sermon and an important subject, nevertheless, because the issue that I will be discussing today is one of the most controversial issues confronting our nation. Crops were sprayed with the aim of demoralising the enemy, and the jungle was to be stripped to the bones, so the Vietnamese communists no longer had a place to hide. Agent Orange was classified as a weed killer, and was used in warfare to destroy crops and jungle. Today, Agent Orange is associated with the deformities it causes in people exposed to the chemical, and their children. The United States gradually increased their military presence in Vietnam through the 1960’s, and began using a new chemical weapon, which came to be known as “Agent Orange”, named after the color on the containers. The first Indo-Chinese war was followed by the second, better known as the Vietnam War, in 1955. The famine would become crucial to the communists who would later seize power, as they used it as a rallying cry.
